BYOM Reflections-Strengths, improvements, celebrations (Jeff)

BYOM Notes & Reflections
Bobby: Some software was not available to parents. Difficult to configure server shortcuts.

Simon: It’s been okay. Tricky for 7&8 students who are brand new to SAS and new to Macs as well. 6th grade Mac and me. It’s been messy, but the teachers have been fantastic.

Joshua: Going well. Lot’s of students did not bring their own mac. There are many students using their old SAS machines and the old image. The software on these machines is horribly out of date.

Jason:
1. New students on orientation day - logged into moodle, powerschool, email, printing.

2. Returning students with new computers - the great unknown. Most of these kids have come to the help desk. However, we are not sure how many kids are not yet registered. Its hard to know what’s going on with these students and their computers.

Jeff Rosen:
Great job on BYOM - let’s communicate with the teachers now and find out what went well and what didn’t.

Jeff Dungan: Well done MS and HS. Kuddos.

Orion:
What is the plan with the student network? Orion says to give him a date for ending the student network. There is no hurry, but that is the plan.

Monday, Sept 1st - a message will go out from TRFs that Student network will go down and you will be locked out.
Monday, Sept 15th - Student network will be shut down.

Guest network and new passwords should be changed on the same timetable.

Orion:
More bandwidth is coming!

Guest network update - please password the guest network
Legimate guests - subs, visiting authors, parents

Concern from Marcel: What will we do when existing students arrive with new computers? Or new students begin mid-year?

Bad news from Orion: There is a bug in getting onto the new network. It’s a bug between Casper and our network. It’s bumping kids onto the guest network. It’s totally random. We are not sure how big a problem this is.

Tech needs some time to solve this problem.

We are looking for a method to find out who is not using SAS_student network.

Josh’s suggestions re Teacher Computers - Whittle down the software on teacher computers and give teachers some control over what’s on their machine. Or give teachers a budget every 4 years to buy their own gear.

Adobe suite in PXHS Art - a big problem

Action item for Orion - Get pictures and names of each Apple Centre employee as an attachment.

Options for feedback.
1. Email to May
2. Apple Centre Feedback Form

Account Management (Jason/Jeff)
  • IXL (Bobby)
  • SmartMusic (Bobby)
Send an email to Simon with your smart music numbers.
  • SmartBoard software (Notebook)? (Bobby)
What's the deal? Is this a conversation we could have with administrators.
  • PearsonSuccessNet
    • webaccount@sasstudent.org
    • Add all web accounts, administrators, user/passwords, divisions where web app is used, to google doc
      • Web Accounts Private right now, Jeff will add Tech Coaches to this is there is consensus.

  • Student email approaching 6000 user limit (Jason)
Action item - Bobby (because he is awesome) is going to prune student gmails by graduation.
  • Puxi HS Data 08/25/14 (Jason) Feel free to add your division's data here.
  • We cannot assume 1:1 ratio students enrolled in Casper and number of machines enrolled, as number of machines exceeds number of students in a few cases.
    • How can we prune sasstudent.org gmail accounts? (I think Bobby had a way to search by graduation year.)
      • (Bobby) No I though I had one but no joy. Best to export to CSV and search/filter using Excel. Also, I can't seem to find a bulk delete procedure). Use a vlookup (w/false parameter) against a current powerschool export to flag accounts suspected as not belonging to current students. Assistants can then confirm the status prior to deletion. #gottabeabetterway.
      • Also, we need to establish a catch-all account (deleted@sasstudent.org?) to accept ownership of the documents and apps associated with any google domain user we elect to delete before the deltion(s) can be completed.
    • EduBlogs, Wikis, Video Server (Jeff)
